Food Delivery Platform Orders and User Statistics

Company reports show substantial transaction volume, but the definitions differ. DoorDash Total Orders include Marketplace and Commerce Platform orders, while Uber’s Trips combine Mobility rides and Delivery orders.

DoorDash’s reported Total Orders rose from 1.736 billion in 2022 to 2.161 billion in 2023 and 2.583 billion in 2024. The December user figure is a month-end snapshot, not an annual average, and the combined membership figure is not necessarily a count of unique people across programs.

Uber reported 11.273 billion completed trips in 2024, up 19% year over year. Its global platform consumer measure includes people completing a Mobility ride or receiving a Delivery order and is averaged over the months of the fourth quarter, so it is not a restaurant-delivery-only user count.

Food Delivery Market Statistics: Gross Bookings, Revenue and Growth

Transaction value and company revenue are different measures. DoorDash Marketplace GOV includes taxes, tips and applicable consumer fees, while Uber Delivery Gross Bookings include taxes and fees; neither should be read as revenue.

Measure 2022 2023 2024
DoorDash Marketplace GOV $53.414 billion $66.771 billion $80.231 billion, up 20%
DoorDash company revenue $6.583 billion $8.635 billion $10.722 billion, up 24%
DoorDash net revenue margin 12.3% 12.9% 13.4%

DoorDash’s company-wide figures include Marketplace and Commerce Platform activity, not only restaurant delivery. The company also reported $4.979 billion in GAAP gross profit and $123 million in GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders for 2024.

Uber Delivery Gross Bookings increased across each quarter of 2024:

  • $17.699 billion in Q1 2024.
  • $18.126 billion in Q2 2024.
  • $18.663 billion in Q3 2024.
  • $20.126 billion in Q4 2024.

Uber reported that Delivery Gross Bookings grew 17% year over year on a constant-currency basis in 2024. Delivery revenue increased $1.5 billion, or 13%, compared with 2023, while Delivery Adjusted EBITDA increased 64%; Adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure.

Uber also cited $461 million of additional Delivery advertising revenue in 2024 versus 2023.

Food Delivery Adoption and Ordering Frequency

The Food Standards Agency’s Food and You 2 Wave 7 results describe self-reported behavior in Great Britain. The platform category includes Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats, and the frequency results are conditional on respondents who used that platform type.

  • 54% of respondents had ordered food or drink from an online ordering and delivery company.
  • Among those platform users, 19% ordered about once a week or more often.
  • 73% ordered two or three times a month or less often.
  • 7% could not remember how often they ordered through the platform.
  • 14% had ordered food or drink through a food-sharing app.
  • 28% had ordered through an online marketplace.
  • 8% had ordered through social media.
  • 14% of restaurant, takeaway or cafe website users ordered about once a week or more often through that direct channel.

These percentages use different channel populations where stated, so they should not be added together to produce a single national adoption rate. The survey also treats food-sharing apps, online marketplaces and social-media ordering as categories separate from restaurant delivery companies.

Food Delivery Channels, Meal Types and Payment Behavior

Wave 7 also shows what people reported ordering through different digital channels. Food-type percentages can overlap because respondents could select multiple types.

Channel users in Great Britain Most reported food category Share Period
Online ordering and delivery companies Prepared cooked meals or snacks 93% FSA Wave 7
Restaurant, takeaway or cafe websites Prepared cooked meals or snacks 89% FSA Wave 7
Food-sharing apps Baked goods and desserts 59% FSA Wave 7
Online marketplaces Packaged goods 41% FSA Wave 7
Social media Sweets and chocolates 32% FSA Wave 7

The prepared-food figures are conditional on channel use, while the marketplace and social-media categories are broader than prepared restaurant delivery. They describe survey responses rather than platform transaction totals.

Digital purchasing behavior in the Philippines provides a separate view of device and payment choices. In 2024, 66.6% of online buyers used smartphones to purchase goods or services online, compared with 35.7% in 2019; these are broad online-purchase measures, not food-delivery-only figures.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that 69.4% of internet users who bought goods online preferred delivery to receive purchases in 2024. Cash on delivery was preferred by 97.6% of online buyers, and 42.9% of people who did not use electronic payments cited security concerns as their top reason.

The seller side also changed: 22.7% of Philippine online sellers used official store websites in 2024, compared with 1.0% in 2019. This is a seller-channel statistic, not a measure of consumer adoption of restaurant delivery.

Online Grocery Delivery Statistics: Participation and Fulfillment

Online grocery delivery is related to food delivery but measures groceries and fulfillment choices rather than prepared restaurant meals. The USDA Economic Research Service reported results for U.S. residents aged 15 and older who were at least somewhat involved in grocery shopping.

In 2022, 19.3% of this eligible U.S. population bought groceries online at least once in the prior 30 days. Among online grocery shoppers:

  • 48.7% chose home delivery.
  • 49.1% chose grocery pickup.
  • 30.2% made one online grocery purchase in the prior month.
  • 25.1% made two purchases in the prior month.
  • 44.7% made three or more purchases in the prior month.

The delivery and pickup percentages are conditional on online grocery shopping, and the categories are not presented here as a single exclusive choice. The frequency figures describe recent online grocery shoppers, not all U.S. residents.

The USDA also reported regression-model predictions by education level. In 2022, the predicted probability of online grocery shopping was 9% for people with less than a high-school diploma or GED and 26% for people with more than a bachelor’s degree, a reported difference of 17 percentage points.

These are modeled estimates, not raw subgroup percentages.

Food Delivery Statistics Across Countries and Digital Purchasing

Country comparisons require careful attention to denominator and category. Cyprus figures distinguish all online ordering from restaurant or fast-food delivery and pickup, while Philippine figures primarily describe online purchasing more broadly.

Geography and measure Period Result Population or denominator
Cyprus: placed online orders Q1 2023 55.3% People aged 16–74
Cyprus: placed online orders Q1 2024 63.6% People aged 16–74
Cyprus: restaurant or fast-food delivery or pickup Q1 2024 78.8% Online shoppers
Philippines: smartphone online purchasing 2019 35.7% Online buyers
Philippines: smartphone online purchasing 2024 66.6% Online buyers
Philippines: preferred cash on delivery 2024 97.6% Online buyers

Sources: Survey Results on ICT Usage in Households and by Individuals 2024 and Highlights of the 2024 National Information and Communications Technology Household Survey.

Cyprus online-ordering participation increased by 8.3 percentage points from Q1 2023 to Q1 2024, based on the official survey percentages. The 78.8% restaurant or fast-food result is conditional on online shoppers and includes delivery or pickup, so it is not equivalent to the 63.6% all-online-ordering measure.

The Philippine smartphone figures rose from 35.7% of online buyers in 2019 to 66.6% in 2024. The payment result remains a broad online-buying statistic, and the security concern result applies only to the subgroup that did not use electronic payments.

These distinctions matter when using food delivery statistics: platform orders are not the same as unique users, gross bookings are not revenue, grocery fulfillment is not prepared-meal delivery, and survey percentages often depend on a defined channel-user population.
